KOEN HOLTKAMP of MOUNTAINS, live at Little Amps (uptown)
SUNDAY APRIL 6th, 2014, 7PM, all-ages, $5 suggested donation.
MORE INFO ON KOEN: HERE
Koen Holtkamp creates music that exists simultaneously in large and small scales. His compositions lend themselves to careful examination, with each sound precisely placed. Holtkamp (who is one-half of Mountains) considers every instrument he uses carefully and pays specific attention to the environment, actual or digital, in which that instrument is being recorded and processed. They also expand and evolve gradually, giving a sense of boundlessness that extends not only to a specific song or album, but also to his discography as a whole. On "Motion" (Koens new LP), Holtkamp plays with these ideas of scale and space, using shifting array of analog, digital and acoustic sources to explore the perceived effect of moving from one dynamic space to another. He excels at coaxing the sublime out of the synthetic, writing music that seems as if it has existed in nature for eons, but can only now be uncovered using modern electronic instrumentation.
While Holtkamp traditionally composes based on material developed during live performances, the first three tracks on Motion were written and realized entirely in the studio. This approach gave him the opportunity to really hone in on each separate instrument individually allowing for a deeper sense of focus and less of a reliance on live sampling and looping. “Vert” features some of the most prominent, even aggressive, use of electric guitar in any of his work. On “Crotales” Holtkamp juxtaposes iridescent analog synths and virtual “acoustic” instruments such as computer generated upright bass and crotales, offering a surreal take on his archetypal approach. The entire b-side is occupied by the sprawling “Endlessness,” a richly textured swell of overlapping drones and chirping synthesizers.
Motion is presented as a stand-alone LP, and is also available as an extended CD release coupled with a second disc of Connected Works, compiling all of Holtkamp’s vinyl-only releases digitally for the first time. This includes Liquid Light Forms (Barge, 2013), Gravity/Bees (Thrill Jockey 2010), and Make Haste (A Room Forever, 2008). Listening to these albums all together only serves to reinforce a direct through line in his solo works, his techniques and timbral palate evolving as steadily and gradually as the pieces themselves.

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 7th, 2014
LEGENDARY GUITARIST: PETER WALKER
Peter Walker is an American original, as eclectic and enigmatic as the songs he writes. The legendary seventy-five year old raga/psychedelic/folk acoustic guitarist, who was schooled by masters such as Ravi Shankar, and Ali Akbar Khan, has been described by Larry Coryell as, “One of the most original practitioners of contemporary music” and proclaimed by the Beatles’ press agent Derek Taylor as “Perhaps the greatest guitarist in the world.” His music, celebrated by the late Jack Rose, James Blackshaw, Steffen Basho-Junghans, Thurston Moore, and Greg Davis, all contributed original compositions to the 2006 tribute album, A Raga For Peter Walker. In the mid-‘60s, while musical director to Timothy Leary’s LSD explorations, Walker released the classic Rainy Day Raga LP in 1966, and 1968’s influential Second Poem to Karmela or Gypsies Are Important, both on Vanguard Records. Following that, he disappeared from recording for almost forty years, but never stopped practicing, learning, reaching.

BoatPeople and Moviate are thrilled to present an evening with
Josephine Foster, Viking Moses and Victor Herrero
at the MakeSpace! Doors 7:45, $5, All Ages
JOSEPHINE FOSTER is a modern American folk singer-songwriter and musician from Colorado. As an adolescent she worked as a funeral and wedding singer, and aspired to become an opera singer. Several years later she abandoned the idea and began to record demos of her songs, resulting in the early recordings There are Eyes Above (2000), an album of ukulele accompanied songs strongly influenced by Tin Pan Alley, and a short album of children's songs, Little Life (2001).
In 2004 joined by her occasional backing band The Supposed, Josephine released an album of psychedelic rock called 'All the Leaves Are Gone' which has drawn comparison to Patti Smith and Jefferson Airplane. The songs on her first solo studio album 'Hazel Eyes, I Will Lead You' (2005) evoke early American folk and blues forms of the early 20th century. 'A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' released in 2006, features unorthodox interpretations of 19th century German art-songs. Her third solo album 'This Coming Gladness' was released in 2008. 'Graphic as a Star' was released in 2010.
In 2012, she returned to Colorado to record a solo album Blood Rushing which took inspiration from local themes from her childhood such as the western geography, native rhythms, and imagined mythology. It featured the ensemble of Victor Herrero on classical and electric guitars, Paz Lenchantin (Zwan, Pixies, Entrance Band) on bass, Heather Trost (A Hawk and a Hacksaw) on violin, and Ben Trimble on pueblo skin drums and was chosen among the best albums of 2012 in the WIRE.
Josephine returns in 2013 with her new album 'I'm A Dreamer'.
Time Out wrote:
"It's a pretty much perfect set, a quiet masterclass in songwriting with melodies that find the sweet spot in unexpected places and a self-possessed beauty that only grows with every listen." 5*s
The Wire wrote:
"Fosters vocal endows each line with the power of flight"
Mojo wrote;
"infused with a joyous communal warmth - 4/5"
VIKING MOSES (Full Band), AKA Brendon Massei, achieves a special balance of warmth and command, with familiar melodies that draw listeners in and oblige them to stay. Strongly lyrical songs are played out through tunes that flirt with pop, folk, indie, grunge and americana, all strung together with a unique pulsing guitar, and by Massei’s robust voice, which ebbs from delicate whispers to throaty howls.
20 years and counting, Massei has won over fans and critics not only with the delicate melodies of his songs, but also through his versatility as a performer — his live show is as compelling in a living room as it is in a major venue, and his songs as natural in a movie soundtrack as on a record player. The lore of Massei’s outsider lifestyle has won him interest and praise.
2013 sees the release of “Werewolves Across America”, a feature-length documentary by directors D.A.R.Y.L. (directors of “Katy Perry: Part Of Me”) about Massei’s life and lifestyle as a touring musician. Massei’s music also features on UK feature film “Kelly + Victor” (2012) and documentary film “The Legend Of Masty Huba” (2011).
Massei is now adding the finishing touches of a new conceptual album, to be titled “Jahiliyah”.
MTV wrote:
“If the DIY house show circuit has a pied piper, his name is Brendon Massei. Massei, who plays music under the name Viking Moses, has been recording and touring independently as a full-time job since he was 14, and he’s spent more than half of his life paving trails for other musicians to follow. Artists that Massei took on their first tours include: Deer Tick, Scout Niblett and Nat Baldwyn of the Dirty Projectors.”
Alan McGee wrote in The Guardian UK:
“Viking Moses is ‘The Most Uniquely talented musician since Kurt Cobain… an absolute genius, and one of the best musicians I have ever released.”
VICTOR HERRERO was introduced to music in his childhood while living in the famous monastery Franco erected in a mountain valley west of Madrid (El Valle de los Caídos). There he learned to sing Gregorian and Mozarabic chant under the guidance of Benedictine monks. As a teenager back in his hometown Toledo he formed a psych-rock outfit called ‘Cicely’, which grew into a popular Madrid-based band. The group lasted 8 years, after which Victor recorded and released an album of his solo piano compositions "Connotaciones para Piano" (Sello Autor - SGAE, 2006) under his old stage name “Victor Cicely”. Shortly after this period, Victor met his wife the US artist Josephine Foster. He plays lead guitar on her albums “This Coming Gladness” (Bo’Weavil Recordings, 2008) as well as on her two solo albums; “Blood Rushing” (Fire Records, 2012) and the forthcoming “I´m a Dreamer” (Fire Records, 2013). In May 2013, Herrero released his third solo album, “Estampida”, a collection of original songs written in Spanish, on Foehn Records and Windbell Records Japan.

"This record is fucking magical. It has woven a tender web of sound around my head and ensnared the senses completely. It is everything I love in music; the delicate dance between the alienation of drone and the total sexual intimacy of a single voice."
- Eriq Nelson, Crappy Indie Music blog
"5 second review: When I close my eyes and listen to Two Mountains I find myself whisked away to an Arctic tundra (maybe it’s the name helping out). As I continue to listen I invision myself lying on my back with the soft sound of the ice breathing below me and the wind softly tickling the snow dusts around me. Her voice reminds me of twilight in the winter when the sun has dipped below the horizon and there is a fine royal blue trim of sky hovering under the looming darkness. And in that moment, if I happen to catch it, I always invision there’s a soft voice stretching out over the lands – that’s exactly how I hear eskimeaux’s voice. Each song on the album whispers elegance and embodies the ethereal chords of choir boys. If I reviewed this song-by-song each song would read: “angelic orchestration of vocals and music”. Each and every song fulfills this description. There is not one disappointment on the album."

from wiki:
Neptune is a noise music band from Boston, noted for having built their custom-made guitars and basses out of scrap metal. The band also plays custom-made percussion instruments and electric lamellophones.
Band history: Neptune's origins trace to a 1994 sculpture project by Boston artist/musician Jason Sanford, who created the band's guitars and drums from scrap steel and found objects. In 2007, they released their album Gong Lake on the Table of the Elements label, home to art heroes Tony Conrad, Rhys Chatham and Faust. Neptune has performed with artists including The Ex, Mission of Burma, Ut, Oneida, Lightning Bolt, The Flaming Lips, Blonde Redhead, Melt-Banana, Charles Hayward, Liars, Black Dice, James Chance & the Contortions, Gang Gang Dance, The Dresden Dolls, Six Finger Satellite, and Wolf Eyes.
As of 2011, the lineup includes Sanford and longtime Neptune collaborator Mark Pearson as well as musicians/instrument inventors Kevin Micka and Farhad Ebrahimi.
