At 5pm, Michael Long will present San Francisco's City Lights' recently published /I Must Resist: Bayard Rustin's Life In Letters/. The book, edited by Long and featuring a foreword by Julian Bond, is published on the centennial of Rustin's birth and in anticipation of the 50th anniversary of the historic March on Washington. Following the lecture at 7:30pm, Moviate will host a screening of Nancy Kates' film on Rustin: /Brother Outsider. /Wine and refreshments will be provided, and donations will be accepted for the LGBT Center Coalition.
Bayard Rustin has been called the "lost prophet" of the civil rights movement. A master strategist and tireless activist, he is best remembered as the organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, one of the largest nonviolent protests ever held in the U.S. He brought Gandhi's protest techniques to the American civil rights movement and played a deeply influential role in the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., helping to mold him into an international symbol of nonviolence. Despite these achievements, Rustin often remained in the background. He was silenced, threatened, arrested, beaten, imprisoned and fired from important leadership positions, largely because he was an openly gay man in a fiercely homophobic era. Here we have Rustin in his own words in a collection of over 150 of his letters; his correspondents include the major progressives of his day. Bayard Rustin's eloquent, impassioned voice, his ability to chart the path "from protest to politics," is both timely and deeply informative. As the Occupy movement ushers America into a pivotal election y the strategic thinking and tactical planning that led to the successes of one of America's most transformative and historic social movements. Michael Long's previous books include /Marshalling Justice: The Early Civil Rights Letters of Thurgood Marshall/ and /First Class Citizenship: The Civil Rights Letters of Jackie Robinson/. He has appeared on C-Span and NPR, and his speaking engagements have taken him from the National Archives in Washington, D.C., to the Houston Public Library in Texas, to the City Club of San Diego. He has spoken most recently at a New York Historical Society event held at the Metropolitan Club in New York City.

"BLANK CITY" ONE SCREENING ONLY!
directed by Celine Danhier
Starring Debbie Harry, Steve Buscemi, John Waters, John Lurie, Jim Jarmusch, Thurston Moore, Beth B, Ann Magnuson, Nick Zedd, Richard Kern, Lydia Lunch and many more!
"BLANK CITY" tells the long-overdue tale of a disparate crew of renegade filmmakers who emerged from an economically bankrupt and dangerous moment in New York history. In the late 1970's and mid 80's, when the city was still a wasteland of cheap rent and cheap drugs, these directors crafted daring works that would go on to profoundly influence the development of independent film as we know it today.

DYNAMO SHORT DOCS from the UNDERGROUND!
Amazing program of short documentaries curated for this screening only:
SMUT CAPITAL OF AMERICA (Michael Stabile, 2011)- 17 minutes
-In the late 1960s, as the Sexual Revolution was first gaining steam, San
Francisco was pushing the boundaries of what could be filmed and quickly
became, according to the NY Times, 'The Smut Capital of the United
States.' From shabby storefront theaters and live sex shows to the Erotic
Film Festival, the City became ground zero in the fight over obscenity, as
both local politicians and Federal law enforcement went to war with
filmmakers and free-speech advocates. 'Smut Capital' talks to the theater
owners, film producers and stars in an attempt to recreate a revolution
that wasn't televised, but screened. Featuring John Waters. Premiered at
The Tribeca Film Festival
A CALL OF CONSCIENCE: PENNHURST STATE SCHOOL & HOSPITAL (Heath Hofmeister, 2011)- 16 minutes
A short documentary about the Pennhurst State School & Hospital located
outside of Philadelphia, PA. Hidden in a remote river bend in Pennsylvania, 10,500 people were forced to call this place 'home'. Now neglected, decaying and hidden beneath decades of over-growth, one of America's most dramatic civil rights stories awaits discovery. A Call of Conscience: Pennhurst State School and Hospital uncovers the untold story of the birth place of the Civil Rights Movement of the Intellectually Disabled. Supported by their families and community, this group of residents united and overcame the label of 'retarded' to lead and win one of the greatest civil victories for the disabled in U.S History. The result of their struggle not only won their freedom but positively transformed the social landscape of America forever!
THE DEBRIS (SMALL SLIVERS OF CELLULOID) (Jeremy Moss, 2012) - 7 minutes
An experimental documentary exploring the Southern Utah desert and human remnants thereon; ideology intersects image and site. Shards from a Utah Mormon's mind.

"INTO ETERNITY" by Michael Madsen. A documentary on building a home NUCLEAR WASTE. -a chilling and powerful film, see the synopsis below the trailer.
INTO ETERNITY - SYNOPSIS
Documentary 2009, 75 min, HD 16:9
Every day, the world over, large amounts of high-level radioactive waste created by nuclear power plants is placed in interim storages, which are vulnerable to natural disasters, man-made disasters, and to societal changes. In Finland the world's first permanent repository is being hewn out of solid rock - a huge system of underground tunnels - that must last 100,000 years as this is how long the waste remains hazardous.
Once the waste has been deposited and the repository is full, the facility is to be sealed off and never opened again. Or so we hope, but can we ensure that? And how is it possible to warn our descendants of the deadly waste we left behind? How do we prevent them from thinking they have found the pyramids of our time, mystical burial grounds, hidden treasures? Which languages and signs will they understand? And if they understand, will they respect our instructions? While gigantic monster machines dig deeper and deeper into the dark, experts above ground strive to find solutions to this crucially important radioactive waste issue to secure mankind and all species on planet Earth now and in the near and very distant future.
Captivating, wondrous and extremely frightening, this feature documentary takes viewers on a journey never seen before into the underworld and into the future.

From Wikipedia:
Bryan Lewis Saunders (born 1969, in Washington, D.C.) is a performance artist, videographer, and performance poet widely known for his disturbing spoken word rants, tragic art performances and Stand up tragedy.[1] On March 30, 1995, Bryan began drawing at least one self-portrait every day for the rest of his life.[2] For 11 days in 2001, Bryan conducted an experiment in which he ingested or inhaled a different intoxicant everyday and created a self-portrait under the influence documenting the effects of his altered perception.[3] In January 2011, a selection of the drug induced self-portraits presented online went viral.[4] In 2003, Bryan began sleeping with a cassette recorder and documenting both his dreams and somniloquy which led to a wealth of source material for both audio releases and books. The transcriptions of his lengthy somniloquy led to what is known as the Stream of unconsciousness (narrative mode) method of writing.[5]
