July 9th, 2004:
Skatetown USA
(1979)

"The Rock and Roller Disco Movie of the Year!" 98 mins.

Mark Hammil (Luke Skywalker)'s first feature after making Star Wars, starring Scott Baio, features Patrick Swayze in his first film role ever. Also starring Marcia Brady (Maureen McCormack) bursting out of her spandex dress, Dave Mason of the band Traffic, and Flip Wilson!!!
Synopsis: It is a one day / one location (Skating Rink) comedy film like MALLRATS and CLERKS, and about as poignant as each. Excellent 70's soundtrack by Eddie Money, Earth Wind & Fire, Jackson 5, Cheap Trick and more. Not Officially Available on video or dvd, so this is a very rare event. Baio stars (and gets top billing) -- but it's really more of an ensemble project. Baio was apparently 18 when this film was released, but he really looks more like 13. His friend Stan (Greg Bradford) and Stan's little sister Susan (Maureen McCormick, of "The Brady Bunch") have a roller skating routine that they're going to do at the rink Friday night -- or whatever. Baio seems to be like they're agent/promoter/manager. He wears a hat like somebody out of His Girl Friday. Maureen McCormick -- Marcia Brady -- was apparently 23 when this film came out (five years after The Brady Bunch series ended), but she too looks young, like 15. Or maybe I'm just getting old. Meanwhile, Swayze is the head of the villain roller skaters -- Ace. His right arm guy is Ron "Horseshack" Palillo, of "Welcome Back Kotter." Flip Wilson and his father, the womanizing Billy Barty, run the club. Ruth Buzzi drops in for a dumb cameo where she (and many others) are given pizza that accidently had quaaludes ground into the dough.

The opposition tries to compromise him, but even as nubile young agents are thrown at him, he remains above it all. Going beyond parody to sillyness, every agent is renamed James Bond, 007 to confuse the enemy, including Woody Allen who plays, Little Jimmy Bond.
