The mission of the Moviate Film Camp is to allow young aspiring filmmakers to use real film cameras and film editing equipment to express themselves.
Film camp take place over 5 days of 3 hour classes. Locations of the film camps have been downtown Harrisburg and downtown and suburban Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Each Student shoots with Kodak Plus-X and Tri-X Black and White Super-8 Film, using Kinoflex Super-8 Cameras, Ciro Guillotine tape and Kodak Press Tape Splicers, and Elmo, Hahnel, and Yashica Super-8 Viewers. Their process is to Film their subject (city, people, etc.), View their footage, Edit the film, an project the final cut film using an Elmo 1200 Super-8 projector.
After the premier screening of the final film edit, the film is transfered to Video, and copied to vhs and dvd for filmmakers. Variations on the Moviate Film Camp depend on funding availability: Occasionally we are priviledged to use a Pro8mm film package with Professional Telecine Tranfer to MiniDV, edit on Macintosh ibook or powerbooks with iMovie. and then project the edited movie as a video. Dubs to vhs and dvd are made for the filmmakers. Screenings at the film camp and the annual Artsfest Film Festival at Harrisburg's Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts are free and family, friends, and the community watch these Super-8 films.
Funding in the past has come from individual donations, a grant from JumpStreet, Moviate screenings, and most recently the Kitsch Art Auction which raised $200 for film and processing expenses.
The upcoming Moviate Film Camp will take place in June of 2005.
