  Moviate was created in April 1997 as an outlet for independent cinema as well as a resource for local artists and cinema enthusiasts.
 

Moviate is dedicated to bringing images created by artists and filmmakers that push the boundaries of art and cinema.

Screenings in the past have included works from: Man Ray, Michael Snow, John Frankenheimer, Tony Conrad, Jerry Orr, Guy Maddin, Maya Deren, Bruce Conner, Todd Seltzer, Tim Burton, Caroline Koebel, Ami-Sue Enns, George Kuchar, James Broughton, John Waters, Gary Adlestein, Martha Colburn, Orgone, Bill Morrison, Michael O’Reilly, Werner Herzog, Akira Kurosawa, Les Blank, Jonas Mekas, and more....

Other special screenings included in-personal appearances by filmmakers Bill Morrison, Martha Colburn, Orgone, Jerry Orr, Jamie Harrar, Gary Adlestein, Michael O’Reilly, Justin and Paul Manlove, and Michael Narren.

A live musical performance by Jad Fair (of Half Japanese) followed the documentary, "The Band That Would Be King", by Jeff Feurzig, a documentary on the legendary Indie Rock band Half Japanese.

Moviate is also a resource center: Super-8 and 16mm cameras are available for filming. We have information on film stocks and prices, where to get movie film developed and how to obtain extra equipment.
